Prison cats paroled

A women's farm prison in Vermont is giving the cats that hang out there the boot. The superintendent of the prison says that having the cats there interferes with the goals of the prison, one of which is have prisoners "learn to control their tempers." Some of these prisoners have been feeding and even paying for the care of these cats. I have to agree with a Humane Society worker who was quoted in the article, saying that caring for cats "teaches empathy, teaches responsibility, teaches compassion." It seems to me that all of this would be important in meeting their stated goal of the inmates learning to control their tempers. Or is it possible that punishment is the real goal of this prison, not rehabilitation?

That is absolutely ridiculous. Unless inmates are harming the cats when they're angry, the action is noting but punitive and ill conceived.

Another similar news story that was emailed to me -- tourist cats at the Whistle Stop Cafe from the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" that will be thrown out soon.

====
The owner of the tourist town used in the Oscar winning movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" has ordered the local cats be removed within two weeks. For over 15 years since it's filming the Whistle Stop Cafe has welcome folks from around the world to dine and enjoy the town's atmosphere. Over the past few years, tourist have been greeted by a set of cats who stroll through the town. Their popularity is great enough they have been featured in merchandise in the local shops.

Juliette receives over 75K tourist annually even 16 years after the movie (visitors world wide come specifically to see the town). Two years ago a documentary was completed about the town that included some of the local cats. Despite pleas by shop keepers, the town's owner will not give them additional time and no one has stepped forward to adopt them. The owner of the shop who has been feeding them does not have a home to take them to and has decided to close her business at the end of the month because of this decision. To find out how to adopt one of the three cats, go to the following link:
